About me
Introduction
Hello! My name is Molly Horal, and I am so excited to be the newest Special Education teacher at Meadowbrook Elementary School! I am very eager to get started, and look forward to the year of learning ahead of us. A little about myself- I am originally from Rochester Hills, and moved to Grand Rapids to attend Grand Valley State University where I studied Special Education and Spanish. In college, I was very active in my sorority, Best Buddies, and in fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am so happy to return back to the Metro Detroit area to launch my career. In my spare time, I enjoy training for endurance events, going to the movies, snowboarding, and attending Detroit sporting events.
Experience
I am extremely proud to be GVSU Laker. The Special Ed program there is very extensive, but provided me with a plethora of experiences and knowledge to take with me as I enter the field. I have worked in special ed settings at the early childhood, primary, and secondary levels. I also have worked in general education settings teaching both second and fourth grade. I have enjoyed all of these experience tremendously. While the students were learning from me, I was learning a great deal from them.
Philosophy
My philosophy for working with students with special needs is stressing the importance of celebrating victories big and small. These children have the ability to learn, but it may be in a different way or at a slower rate. It is important for us to incorporate developmentally appropriate activities each day with our students. Before students can work on higher order academic skills, they must first meet the milestones that will lay the foundation for these other skills. I also feel that students can benefit immensely from explicit social skills lessons. I instruct through read alouds, videos, modeling and role play. I strive to provide as many opportunities as possible for them to put those skills into practice.
I look forward to working with all of you this year! Please never hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, or concerns. I truly believe that we are a team working towards your child's success.
